Irish Hockey League - Competition Format

The Irish Hockey League is made up of 12 participating teams in each of the Men's & Women's leagues, split into two pools of six playing five games throughout the season.

The two top teams in each pool qualify for the semi finals where the Winner from Pool A plays the Runner-up from Pool B and the Winner from Pool B plays the Runner-up from Pool A. The winners of which go onto play in the final the next day.

The Irish Hockey League has adopted a number of rule changes from the EHL, to create a more free flowing, exciting and faster game, a full set of rules and regulations aswell as other useful documents are available under the documents section of this website.

Both the men's and the women's Irish Hockey League is played throughout the season in conjunction with the provincial leagues.

Points allocation for the IHL:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 2 points for a draw
  • 1 additional point for a win by 3 goals or more
  • 1 point for a loss by 1 goal

Group position shall be determined by:

  • Points
  • Goal Difference
  • Highest number of Goals ‘For’
  • Result of matches between teams equal in above

If teams are still equal, they will share the position except when it is a qualification issue, in which case a play-off will be arranged. Such arrangements will be made by teh IHA administration committee.
